SIDE BY SIDE
AN EXHIBITION OF PAINTING PRINT AND COLLAGE
Clifden Arts Festival, 15-23 September 2021.
Kathleen Furey’s paintings, prints and collage reference public and private
documents and recollections. Words and images derived from sketch books,
newspaper reports, historical documents, poetry and song, are combined with
printmaking and painting processes to produce mixed-media works on paper
and board. The hand-coloured lino prints, made in the style of the Cuala Press,
are based on images drawn by her grandfather, Patrick Furey, in the late 1970’s/
1980‘s. Patrick Furey was born in County Galway in 1899. His drawings, created
towards the end of his life, reflect his experiences and interests. The paintings
reference her own and her grandfather’s images. These imagined landscapes
deal with the idea of violence in a peaceful setting and how the landscape we
inhabit today may have been the setting for violent acts at another time. The title
of the exhibition “Side by Side”, are words taken from a newspaper article from
1920 which details an incident during the War of Independence when her
grandfather and his brother Michael were taken at night from their home in
Oranmore, County Galway during a raid by Auxiliary forces. The collage works
are part of an ongoing series combining images and words with fragments of
historical documents to suggest a narrative. The exhibition aims to remember,
celebrate and imagine through a new focus on existing and original visual and
textual materials.
Kathleen Furey is from Galway and is a founder member of Artspace Studios. She
studied painting at the Limerick School of Art and Design.
