Event Details

Connecting Communities with Peatlands is collaborating with Our Irish Heritage to encourage people to ‘Know Your Bog’. We are using an online interactive map that is part of the Know Your 5K initiative to support communities to record bog stories, history, culture, and biodiversity.

Workshop at Galway Teleworks Mountbellew on Thursday 15th September at 7pm.
The workshop will run for two hours.

As Ireland transitions away from using peat as an energy source, we are inviting communities to share their knowledge and memories about their bogs. We are interested in stories and information about the places we live; what we did; who did what; what and who lived there; the sounds; the smells; and what it looked like. Heritage ranges from folklore, to crafts, to biodiversity, to architecture, but ultimately we get to choose our heritage. Anything your community decides is important to document about the bogs and their history will be welcomed. ‘Know Your Bog’ is coordinated by the Connecting Communities with Peatlands project, which works with communities across the Midlands to support and encourage engagement with their local bog or wetland.

Submissions will be added to the #KnowYour5K mapping tool, a joint initiative of the National Museum of Ireland and The Heritage Council.
