Galway County Energy Master Plan

Have your say in the drafting of Galway’s first Energy Master Plan for our County

The Green Recovery Working Group (GRWG) of the Galway County PPN are developing an Energy Master plan for County Galway.

We are currently in the process of preparing an application for energy master plan funding through SEAI, who are providing assistance with the project through their mentoring process.

This plan will underline what is being done across the county and where progress can be made on sustainable energy use. It will identify those areas, communities and businesses that are doing great work and it will identify where there are gaps and opportunities for improvement and replication. The Energy Master plan should help guide and drive development in sustainable energy in our county.

Key stakeholders to date include SEAI, Sustainable Energy Communities across the county (SEC’S), Galway Energy Co-operative GEC, community groups through the PPN and Galway County Council.

The proposed energy master plan for the county is currently at design stage and are seeking your opinions in an online workshop commencing Wednesday 24th November 2021 at 7pm. For the proposed workshop we would like to meet with you online and hear your sustainable energy ideas. We will provide context and outline what others in Ireland are doing, there are inspiring projects everywhere. We will then discuss sustainable energy use in County Galway, what it does well and where it could improve. We will look to build contacts at the workshop so that the ideas within the Energy Master Plan can be rolled out.

Patrick Mc Hugh, steering group, The Green Recovery Working Group (GRWG) said “The development of energy master plan for the county will create a blueprint for each municipal district with short- and long-term objectives over 3 years, the proposed engagement process on the 24th November is a bottom up approach to community energy where your ideas and aspirations can be achieved in a meaningful manner. Given the scale of climate change, Galway communities will be doing their part through the drafting of the proposed energy master plan for the county”.

Mary Mullen, PPN Support Worker, Galway County PPN said “This is an excellent project where communities can come together to focus their resources to achieve their goals. Community projects and plans involve people and organisations working together, having a real effect on people’s lives, with the benefits staying locally.

The Green Recovery Working Group (GRWG) is a linkage group formed in 2020 from various PPN members and individuals with an interest in addressing environmental concerns in County Galway
